Khabar Lahariya (meaning “Wave of News”)—a newspaper founded in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh by Dalit women who face discrimination as “Untouchables” outside the caste system—is embarking on a new challenge: shifting from print to a digital media model centered on social media and YouTube. Trading their pens for smartphones, these female reporters tenaciously pursue stories and deliver unique news, all while contending with the resistance of husbands and families and facing the compounded discrimination and prejudice associated with poverty, social class, and gender. The waves they have created are destined to swell into a powerful, far-reaching surge.
